Deemed Essential ran gamely in her debut finishing 2nd beaten a head going 6 1/2 furlongs over a sloppy (sealed) main track at Gulfstream Park West on Saturday afternoon.

Breaking from post position 3 of 7, Deemed Essential was away in good order under Edgard Zayas as the field raced down the backstretch. Traveling mid-pack some five lengths back, Zayas worked on Deemed Essential to stay engaged through an opening quarter mile in :22.09. Under a drive around the far turn, Deemed Essential grabbed the bit and began to lengthen her stride nicely.

Cruising four-wide, Deemed Essential looked to be traveling best of all while Artie's Rose (1) hugged the rail coming out of the turn. The two fillies paired off at the 1/8 pole and drew away from the field dueling to the wire. Fighting the whole way, Deemed Essential dug in gamely but couldn't edge her rival in the final strides. A short head separated the two at the wire, and it was another 11 or more lengths back to third. The final time was 1:18.23.
