From the first crop of the highly accomplished, Upstart, this attractive filly is out of a graded stakes performing Indian Charlie mare, who is a 100% winner producer.
The sire, Upstart, is by Flatter, one of the most successful stallion son of A.P. Indy. Among the leaders of his generation at two, three and four, Flatter was a stakes winner every year he race. His victories included a 5½ lengths tally over a field that included Frosted and Keen Ice in the Holy Bull Stakes (G2), and he also earned places in six grade one events, including the Champagne Stakes, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Florida Derby, Haskell Invitational Stakes and Metropolitan Handicap.
The dam, Visavis, was debut winner at two, and beaten just a nose in black-type company on her second start. She trained on at three to score in allowance company, and to earn graded black-type with a second in a well contested renewal of the Eight Belles Stakes (G3). With her first three foals, Visavis is dam of Sumlin, who showed exceptional potential with a debut victory at Fair Grounds, before suffering a career ending injury; 2019 winner Creative Style; and Admire, a maiden special weight winner at Churchill Downs at two in 2018.
Visavis is a sister to Wild At Heart, impressive winner of the Buena Vista Stakes (G3), and also three times graded placed, including when third in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1). She is also half-sister to the four-time black-type winner Pickapocket, and half-sister to stakes winner Northern Belle.
The second dam, Lady Cerise, was also a talented runner, with five wins and a trio of black-type places. She is out of Lady Inverness, a nine-time winner who is a sister to stakes winner Miss Creeker, herself dam of stakes winners Canyon Run, Mr. Expo and Smooth, third dam of stakes winners Pumpkin Hollow and Kettle Hill; and fourth dam of graded winner Thatcher Street. Careful, the dam of Lady Inverness and Miss Creeker, is a half-sister to stakes winner Special Verdict, and a sister to Mardi Gras Mombo, dam of stakes winners Premio Mombo and Dare to Duel, and granddam of group winning and group one placed Red Jazz. This is also the family of CCA Oaks (G1) heroine Charon, and Just A Way, multiple grade one winning champion in Japan, and also successful in the Dubai Duty Free (G1).
This filly has a rather intriguing pedigree, as her grandsire, Flatter is by A.P. Indy out of a Mr. Prospector mare, and her stakes placed granddam is by Honor Grades – a half-brother to A.P. Indy – out of a mare by Red Ryder, a brother to Mr. Prospector. The combination of A.P. Indy and Honor Grades gives inbreeding to the great mare, Weekend Surprise. The duplication of Weekend Surprise is found in at least 25 stakes winners, 17 graded, including Champion Two-Year-Old Stevie Wonderboy, and grade one winners Sweet Loretta and Ancelotti, as well as Mad Flatter, a son of Flatter out of a mare by Honor Grades, the two sources of Weekend Surprise in this pedigree.
