Wooderson raced greenly and re-rallied late to finish 2nd beaten 3/4 of a length in his debut, going 6 1/2 furlongs on the maintrack at Gulfstream Park yesterday afternoon VIDEO.
Breaking sharply from post position 3 of 6, Wooderson and jockey Tyler Gaffalione were quick into stride racing down the backstretch. To their outside, Hasta La Byebye (5) hooked Wooderson early and the pair dueled through an opening quarter mile in :22.63.
As they raced around the far turn, Gaffalione couldn't coax Wooderson to stay on and lost position on the rail. Taking dirt to the face for the first time, Wooderson retreated briefly dropping almost four lengths back, while eventual winner The Best Candy (6) made a bold move three wide to take the lead.
As they hit the top of stretch, Gaffalione worked hard to get Wooderson back into gear and outside horses. Once clear, Wooderson picked up the bridle, finally switched leads and looked as though he could make a bid for the wire. However, he raced greenly late, took more kickback and had to settle for place. The final time was 1:18.08 CHART.
