Wednesday, January 2, 2013 | RSS Feeds

Verrazano looked very impressive winning his debut, going 6 1/2 furlongs in yesterday's 2nd race at Gulfstream Park. A 3-year-old colt by More Than Ready, Verrazano drew off in the stretch to best a talented field by 7 3/4 lengths with John Velazquez in the irons.

Breaking from post position 9 of 11, Verrazano broke sharply out of the gate, quickly into stride. Through an opening quarter mile in 22.39, Verrazano and Velazquez tracked the pace in third just a length back. Traveling three wide down the backstretch, eyeing the leaders going into the far turn, Verrazano steadily made his way to the pace setter Acclaim (1) after running a half mile in 45.01.

Coming out of the turn, Verrazano looked to be in control, taking the lead under a hand-ride as they straightened for home. In command the whole way, Verrazano was full of run coming down to the wire with a only a wave of the stick from Velazquez in the stretch. He crossed the wire stopping the clock at 1:16.48 for the final time, widening his margin to 7 3/4.

It was a remarkable debut for our talented 3-year-old, and we're very proud to have him bear the LGS colors.
