Humo d'Oro gained ground late and finished 3rd beaten 1/2 length in a maiden special weight race for two-year-olds, going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Belmont yesterday afternoon VIDEO.
Breaking from the outside post (7 of 7) with John Velazquez up, Humo d'Oro was away in good order and a somewhat green early. Looking a bit eager while pulling Velazuez down the back stretch, Humo d'Oro improved position after a sluggish opening quarter mile in :25.55.
Under a slight hold, Humo d'Oro raced between horses around the far turn as Arch of the Diver (5) kept Velazquez in jail. Meanwhile, Soglio (1) and Heaven is Waiting (2) plodded throughout 3/4 of a mile in 1:14.65 as the field turned for home.
As the front runners kicked on, so did a Humo d'Oro. Velazquez angled out and Humo d'Oro responded with good energy. In an eye-catching effort, Humo d'Oro ate up ground late to miss narrowly by a couple necks. The final time was 1:43.62 CHART.
