El Padrino on Track for Florida Derby

March 25, 2012

Although Saturday's Grade I Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park will be the most challenging start of El Padrino's career, after his latest workout we're confident that our colt will be prepared for the test.

Saddled under Javier Castellano and working alongside a fellow Pletcher trainee, El Padrino went a half mile in :49 flat at Palm Meadows Training Center this morning. The latest in a string of strong workouts, El Padrino looks poised going into the $1,000,000 Kentuck Derby prep race.

Not only will this weekend's race boast a competitive field, including the Michael Matz trained Union Rags, but the route distance of 1 1/8 miles may be a challenge for some. El Padrino has covered that distance in the Grade II Remsen S. at Aqueduct last November as a two-year-old where he finished 3rd beaten less than a length. After consecutive victories in the Grade II Risen Star S. and a key allowance race at Gulfstream Park, we're hopeful and excited to see the performance our colt puts in this Saturday.
