El Padrino 2nd in Return at Gulfstream Park

December 19, 2012

El Padrino finished 2nd today going 1 mile over a fast track at Gulftsream Park. Sent off as the overwhelming favorite in a six horse field, El Padrino didn't get the win but accomplished a couple key objectives.

Breaking from post position 4, El Padrino and jockey Javier Castellano broke well, quickly into stride through the shoot.Working their way down the backstretch, Castellano and El Padrino were four wide in fourth just a half length off the leader when Adirondack King (6) ranged up on our outside prompting Castellano to sit back and let him go by - a tactical move which took El Padrino back a length or two after they ran the half mile in 46.16.

Going into the far turn, Castellano gathered El Padrino and geared him outside to take aim at the leaders. El Padrino responded well passing two rivals with ease as they straightened for home.Citrus Kid (2), who won gate-to-wire with an ideal trip on the rail, had a length lead after 3/4 of a mile in 1:10.56 and would fight on to the wire to win by about a length. Castellano and El Padrino threatened briefly, but hung in the final 1/16 of a mile.

We're pleased with how El Padrino performed and excited to see him back in action. He ran well, and we look forward to his 2013 campaign!
