Daredevil 2nd in Swale

Daredevil finished a game second beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Ready for Rye in the $200,000 Swale S. (G2) at Gulfstream yesterday afternoon. The final time for the 7 furlong contest was a snappy 1:22 1/5 VIDEO.

Breaking from post position 1 of 8, Daredevil was a step slow after brushing his front right side on the gate, and Jockey Javier Castellano quickly found himself in an unfamiliar spot taking dirt some five lengths off the lead.

Once settled and into stride, Castellano guided Daredevil five-wide off the rail well-reserved behind pacesetters X Y Jet (3) and Ready for Rye (4). That pair set solid opening fractions of :22 2/5 and :45 1/5 considering the strong headwinds down the backstretch.

Around the far turn, Daredevil began his chase with a tiring X Y Jet to his inside. Passing that rival with Bluegrass Singer (8) making a bid on his outside, Castellano guided Daredevil back to the rail and gave him his cue as they took aim on Ready for Rye.

Daredevil responded well coming out of the turn and was set down for the stretch drive with less than a quarter mile to the finish. After running 3/4 of a mile in 1:09 2/5, Ready for Rye looked tough some three lengths up on Daredevil and would stay on late while Daredevil could only manage to close the gap marginally. It was another ten lengths back to third place finisher Senor Grits (6). The final time of 1:22 1/5 was rather impressive considering the track was not playing fast on the day CHART.

Daredevil's effort was further validated after receiving a 103 Beyer Speed Figure, the second highest BSF of his career.
