Sent off as the post time favorite, Bourbon in May made the grade scoring a decisive two length score to in Saturday's maiden special weight race for two-year-olds, going 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream Park VIDEO
Breaking from post position 8 of 12, Bourbon in May broke cleanly and was quick into stride under Luis Saez. With an outside post and speed to his inside, Saez watched long shot Snoose Goose (11) clear the field and challenge for the lead going into the first turn. Saez smartly kept on to secure a good stalking position outside Lucky Mike (7) through a hotly contested opening quarter mile in :22.16.
Racing down the (short) backstretch, Bourbon in May looked to be traveling well and poised to make a run as they approached the far turn. Racing three-wide, Bourbon in May quickened nicely and passed several rivals around the bend.
Coming out of the turn with a head in front and less than a quarter mile to the wire, Bourbon in May drifted out as Saez went to the stick right handed. Racing a bit greenly, Bourbon in May regrouped and straightened late to hold off a fast closing Mantra (5) to finish two lengths best in a final time 1:30.06 CHART
